Angelica Verkeenko

Artist’s Statement:

My initial work in this medium was been shaped by the classical aesthetics of my native city  – St. Petersburg, golden spires and cupolas, mixed with the aging bronze sculptures and antique silver patinas. Other influences were the Art Deco period and its geometries, allegorical and  mythological figures and also motifs from 18th century French musical theatre.

My creative process combines my passions for painting, photography, printmaking, and product design.  My current multimedia works focus on my long interest in transfer my impressions of the nature and painting  traditions.

I work on a base  of paperboard. On the primary paper layer I fix the outlines of the finished image in relief and then  build up the relief on top of the initial outlines by applying geometries of metallic paper  and foils.  I work with hand tools to add detail and finishes, in paint and other media. Now that I have

been living  in New York  I am drawn to the spectacle of life here with its rich history and diversity, and  am doing  works based on these new themes. The new work is evolving into a expanded palette  involving colors  and pulsating geometries. I am fascinated by New York history and architecture.
